When bad things are happening in this world you can’t control, make a difference in one person’s life – something you CAN control by becoming a mentor. You’re also making a positive difference in your own life whether you know it or not. You’ll learn patience, being a kid again, pop culture, technology and being a better listener.
I am one year into mentoring my 6th grade match and it’s so enjoyable. It’s like being a fun aunt – have laughter and little to no discipline required! I look forward to our weekly get togethers – whether it’s driving around listening to her song playlist or going to Starbucks for her favorite Pink Drink.
It’s a commitment of a couple of hours each week and I make suggestions on when to meet based on my schedule. When people tell me they don’t have time for mentoring in their life, I ask how many hours a week they spend on their phone or watching shows. You find the time and make the time because you’re giving back to society/community as well.
Kids just want someone to listen to them and do things they normally wouldn’t do. An hour or two a week together might be the highlight of their week.
Kids ‘n Kinship is an amazing program and I’m 100% supported with questions I have. If you’re thinking about being a mentor, attend an information session to learn more. Then look at the kids on the wait list. You won’t regret it!
You can do it and should do it. Make a difference!
